About Laura
Welcome to my profile at Good Karma Assistance Dogs CIC. I am passionate about blending adult education, animal welfare, and inclusive community support to help handlers and their assistance dogs thrive.

My background and journey to Good Karma
I first discovered Good Karma Assistance Dogs after meeting the team and one of their incredible dogs at a local dog show. Seeing the bond and independence that assistance partnerships foster immediately resonated with me. With over 15 years of experience working in adult education, I am currently working towards my professional dog trainer certification with the IMDT. This career switch allows me to combine my passion for learning, teaching, and accessibility with animal welfare to empower our handlers every step of the way.

Meet Hero
My beloved companion, Hero, came into my life while I was living in Athens in 2020. Found roaming the streets skinny, overgrown, and fearful of everything, he was brought into a rescue shelter where a friend was volunteering. I could not bear to leave him behind. He arrived timid, reactive, and fearful of long items, suggesting a difficult past. Through hundreds of hours of patient desensitisation, counter-conditioning, and positive reinforcement, Hero transformed into a calm, gentle, and happy little old gentleman who inspires my commitment to gentle dog training every single day.

Meet Kampanelos
This is Hero's brother-from-another-mother, Kampanelos. I also rescued him while living in Greece (hence his Greek name!). He'd been born to a street cat and was apparently a brave and sociable kitten, who decided he liked the local café and started hanging out there. That's where I met him, 6 or 7 years later, when I randomly went to that café with my laptop – and he just climbed into my lap and stayed there for 2 hours! The café loved and cared for him until he was about 7, until he started getting repeatedly sick and ended up essentially living at the vet. He needed to move to a home where he could be kept indoors, and none of the café staff could take him – so I did. I thought I was adopting a dying cat and giving him a good few final months. Then – zillions of vet visits and euros and medications and cuddles later – he got better! He was diagnosed with FIV, which explained the constant illnesses, and he has some sort of mystery allergy that makes him quite itchy still, but I found a great vet who worked with me to find the perfect treatment plan for him and now you'd never know he'd used up 8 of his 9 lives already. He's fluffy, healthy, and happy – just minus one ear and all his teeth (consequences of previous illnesses!). He's the friendliest, bravest, most confident, most sociable cat I've ever known. He's basically a dog in a cat's body

Life outside of training
When I am not studying training techniques or supporting handlers, you will usually find me enjoying the outdoors. I love birdwatching, crafting, and beekeeping, as well as playing high-energy rhythms with a samba drumming band. These varied passions keep me grounded, curious, and deeply connected to nature and our wider community.
"By combining patient education with compassionate canine training, we help create confident, happy partnerships between handlers and their assistance dogs."
